Buhoma Lodge
Buhoma, Bwindi, Uganda
Buhoma Lodge sits on a forested hillside at the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in the Buhoma sector where some of the park’s best-known gorilla families are tracked. It is a small, quiet lodge of around ten cottages scattered among the trees, each with a private veranda looking out over the forest canopy.
Days here are built around gorilla trekking. You set out after breakfast with your guides and trackers, and come back to a hot drink, boots cleaned for you and a massage for tired legs. It is a simple, comfortable base for trekkers rather than a resort, and that is exactly its charm.

Activities
Bwindi is about the gorillas, but the forest rewards anyone who slows down. Between treks there are walks, birds and local communities to meet.

Gorilla trekking
The reason most guests come. Permits are limited, and small groups of up to eight visitors spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family once the trackers have led you to them. We book your permit and match the trek to your fitness and dates.

Forest walks
Guided walks along the forest edge and community trails are a gentler way to hear and spot forest birds and smaller primates between treks.

Birdwatching
Bwindi is one of Uganda’s richest forests for birds, with more than 350 species recorded, including Albertine Rift specialities that are hard to see elsewhere.

Batwa and village visits
Visits to the nearby Batwa community, the forest’s original people, and to local village projects can be added with a local guide.
Access & location
Bwindi is a long drive from Kampala, so many guests break the journey or fly to the nearest airstrip at Kihihi and drive on from there. We arrange your transfers, permits and timing so that your trekking day is never rushed.

Facilities
A welcoming base for trekkers rather than a resort.
- Lounge with fireplace
- Bar
- Restaurant
- Laundry
- Boot-cleaning service
- Solar power
Meals are served in an elevated main building with views over the forest, mixing familiar dishes with local ones such as matoke and groundnut sauce. Power is solar and sockets are limited to the central area, so bring a power bank and plan to charge cameras there. After a trek the team looks after you with a hot drink and a massage.
Rooms & amenities
Private cottages in the trees, with the forest right outside the door.
- Private veranda
- En-suite bathroom
- Hot shower
- Hot-water bottles
- Forest views
The cottages are spread across the hillside and linked by steps and paths, so expect a little climbing. Evenings in the forest are cool, and the cottages are warmed with hot coals and hot-water bottles in the bed. If steps are a concern, tell us when you enquire and we will ask for the most accessible room.
