Mount Gahinga Lodge
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda
Mount Gahinga Lodge sits at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes on the edge of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in the far south-west of Uganda close to the Rwanda and Congo borders. Gardens and bamboo forest surround a small group of stone-built bandas, with the volcano slopes rising behind them.
It is a lodge for people who like their comfort with a sense of place: log fires, home-grown vegetables, solar light and views across the terraces to the mountains. Gorilla trekking, golden monkeys and a climb up a volcano are all on the doorstep.

Activities
Mgahinga is small but packed: gorillas, golden monkeys and three volcanoes within easy reach of the lodge.

Gorilla trekking
Visit a gorilla family in the foothills of the Virungas. Permits are limited, so we book yours well ahead and advise on the right sector for your dates.

Golden monkeys
Golden monkeys live in the bamboo forest here and are rarely seen anywhere else in Africa. Tracking them is a lively and photogenic outing.

Volcano hikes
Guided hikes climb the volcano slopes, from half-day walks to a longer summit day for strong walkers, with big views over the border country.

Batwa cultural visits
Spend time with the Batwa community near the park, who share how they lived in the forest and visit sites such as Ngarama Cave.

Birdwatching
Birds are easy to enjoy from the lodge terrace, and guided walks add forest species.
Access & location
Mgahinga lies close to Kisoro, the nearest airstrip, and the road from Kampala is a long day. We arrange the transfers and can combine a stay here with Bwindi so that you see both sides of the southern gorilla country.
