Satao Camp
Tsavo East National Park, Kenya
Satao Camp is an unfenced tented camp in Tsavo East National Park, built around a natural waterhole under tamarind and acacia trees. Elephants coated in the park’s red soil are among the animals that come to drink.
It is a traditional, relaxed camp rather than a luxurious one, with a lookout deck over the waterhole, a campfire and a bar, and it is a good choice for wildlife lovers and photographers.

Restaurant, bar, lounge, campfire and a lookout deck over the waterhole.
Game drives, birdwatching, nature walks with a naturalist and trips to the Galana River.

Activities
Tsavo East is a big, wild park, and the camp makes a good base for it.

Game drives
Early-morning and late-afternoon game drives explore the park by four-wheel-drive vehicle, and herds of elephants visit the waterhole at the camp.

Waterhole watching
The waterhole draws wildlife by day and night, and the lookout deck gives you a good position to watch it.

Nature walks and birdwatching
Walks with a naturalist are offered in the camp area, and there is good birdwatching. After dark an askari escorts you to your tent.

Galana River
The Galana River is about an hour to the north, with viewpoints such as Lugard’s Falls and Crocodile Point reached by short footpaths.
Access & location
Satao is about three hours by road from Mombasa, or you can fly to the Satao airstrip, about two kilometres from the camp. We recommend at least three nights, and we can combine it with Tsavo West and the coast.
