Governors’ Camp
On the Mara River, Maasai Mara, Kenya
Governors’ Camp is a classic tented camp on the banks of the Mara River in the Maasai Mara. There are no fences between the camp and the bush, so wildlife walks through, and it has been operating since 1972, making it one of the first luxury camps in the Mara.
Tents face the river, each with an en-suite bathroom and a private verandah, and there is a bar, dining tents, a spa and a kids’ club. Game drives, balloon flights and bush meals on the river make it an easy base for a first Mara safari or a return visit.

Activities
Days follow the usual Mara rhythm of early and late drives, with a few special extras you can add.

Game drives
Game drives run twice a day and are a highlight here, with big cats, hyenas and plenty of birdlife to look for across the Mara.

Hot air balloon safari
Balloons launch from a site behind Little Governors’ Camp. The flight lasts about an hour and ends with sparkling wine and breakfast, followed by a game drive back to camp. It is an optional extra.

Bush meals and sundowners
Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be arranged out in the bush beside the river, and sundowners on the riverbank are a camp tradition.

Village and community visits
Visit a Maasai village or the community school and medical centre, and ask us about a talk with a cheetah researcher, which can be arranged.
Access & location
Governors’ Camp is in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Most guests reach the Mara by light aircraft from Nairobi or by road, and we arrange your transfers and combine the camp with other stops on a longer Kenya trip.
