Kibale Forest National Park protects one of the last expanses of tropical rainforest in East Africa, and it packs an extraordinary density of primates into a relatively small area. With around 1,500 chimpanzees and twelve other primate species, it is widely considered the best place in Africa to track chimps.
Kibale’s dense, moist forest is exceptionally rich in primate life, supporting chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, red colobus and grey-cheeked mangabeys, often within the same short walk. The park sits conveniently between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Fort Portal, making it easy to combine with a broader western Uganda itinerary.
What to Expect
Standard chimp tracking permits allow a maximum one-hour visit once a community is located, typically in the morning. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is a longer, more immersive alternative for a smaller group. Tracking usually takes one to three hours through forest trails, a minimum age of 12 typically applies, and it combines well with the nearby Bigodi Wetland for a lighter afternoon activity.

Getting to Kibale Forest
Kibale sits in western Uganda, conveniently positioned between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Fort Portal, making it easy to combine with a broader western Uganda safari itinerary. Most visitors arrive by road as part of a wider circuit, and charter flights to nearby airstrips can also be arranged.

Chimpanzee tracking runs all year, and the forest is rewarding in every month. June to September and December to February are the driest, with easier walking and better odds of dry photography. March to May and September to November bring heavy rain: trails are muddy, but sightings are still good and the forest is lush. Pack a rain jacket whenever you go, since showers can arrive in any month.
Know before you go
- Chimpanzee tracking has morning and afternoon departures, with permits limited per day. Book early for peak months.
- Habituation Experience. For a longer encounter, the full-day experience lets you follow chimpanzees from the nest to the end of the day.
- Minimum age is 12 for chimpanzee tracking.
- Keep your distance and stay healthy. Chimpanzees are susceptible to human illnesses, so anyone who is unwell may be asked to stay behind.
- What to wear. Long trousers tucked into socks, closed waterproof boots, a light rain jacket, and a hat. Insect repellent helps in the forest.

How likely am I to see chimpanzees?
Very likely. Kibale has one of the highest chimpanzee concentrations in Africa, and sightings on tracking days are consistently high.

Thirteen primate species, including red colobus, black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys, blue monkeys and L'Hoest's monkeys, plus forest elephants and over 300 bird species.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community-run swamp walk that is excellent for birds and monkeys, and the nearby crater lakes around Fort Portal are scenic places to relax.
Is Kibale better than Budongo or Kyambura for chimps?
Kibale is the most reliable for tracking. Budongo and Kyambura Gorge are good alternatives when your route runs through Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth.
