Murchison Falls
Murchison Falls National Park spans the banks of the Victoria Nile as it thunders through a narrow gorge before spreading into a wide, wildlife-rich savannah. It’s Uganda’s largest protected area, combining classic game drives with one of East Africa’s most dramatic river cruises.
The park takes its name from the falls themselves, where the entire Victoria Nile forces through a gap barely seven metres wide before plunging 43 metres down. Few sights in East Africa match its raw power, and a launch cruise brings you close to pods of hippo, basking crocodiles and elephants drinking at the water’s edge before arriving at the base of the falls.
What to Expect
Most visitors spend two to three nights combining morning and afternoon game drives across the northern savannah with the signature boat cruise, a hike to the top of the falls for a dramatic overhead view, and an optional half-day of chimpanzee trekking in nearby Budongo Forest.
