Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater

A Ngorongoro Crater safari descends into a collapsed volcano forming a natural enclosure roughly 20 kilometres across, with walls rising 600 metres above the crater floor. Its self-contained ecosystem supports an extraordinarily dense population of wildlife, including one of the highest concentrations of lion and one of the last strongholds of black rhino in East Africa.

Because animals rarely leave the crater’s steep walls, wildlife density stays exceptionally high and sightings are consistent year-round, making it one of the most dependable game-viewing destinations anywhere in Africa. Most visitors stay on the crater rim and descend for a full-day game drive; authorities tightly regulate access, allowing only a limited number of vehicles on the crater floor at any time.

What to Expect

Most travelers pair a visit to Ngorongoro Crater with nearby highlights such as the Serengeti and Tarangire National Park, combining sites into a single seamless northern-circuit itinerary rather than backtracking between stops.

Activities & Wildlife

From concentrated crater floor game drives to rare black rhino, a soda lake ringed with flamingo and Maasai cultural visits on the rim, Ngorongoro packs Africa's highest wildlife density into one caldera.

Descend from the rim onto the crater floor for concentrated wildlife viewing in one of Africa’s most productive ecosystems, with predators, elephant and buffalo often visible within the first hour.

Getting to Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is roughly a two-hour drive from Arusha, most of it on paved road, with the final stretch climbing to the rim before the crater floor comes into view below. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority sets entry and crater service fees, and Detlef Safaris books a rim-side lodge so your descent to the crater floor can start early, ahead of the day's other vehicles.
