Amboseli National Park

Kenya

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park sits in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in southern Kenya near the Tanzania border. The park is renowned for its large elephant herds, among the best-studied and most habituated in Africa thanks to decades of continuous research, and for arguably the best mountain backdrop of any safari destination on the continent.

Beneath its dry, dust-blown plains, Amboseli is fed by underground springs off Kilimanjaro’s snowmelt, which surface as permanent swamps such as the Enkongo Narok Swamp. These wetlands draw elephant, hippo and buffalo year-round, even through the driest months, making Amboseli one of the most dependable places in Africa for close-range elephant sightings.

What to Expect

Most visitors spend two to three nights, combining dawn game drives timed for clear Kilimanjaro views before the clouds build up with a walk up Observation Hill, the park’s only spot where visitors may leave their vehicles, for a panoramic view over the swamps and plains below. Amboseli pairs easily with the Maasai Mara or Tsavo for a multi-park Kenya itinerary.

Activities & Wildlife

From elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro to the swamps that sustain them year-round, Amboseli delivers Africa's most photographed safari backdrop.

Getting to Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is roughly a four-hour drive southeast of Nairobi via Namanga, or a short scenic flight of around 45 minutes from Wilson Airport into the park's own airstrip. Most visitors spend two to three nights, combining dawn and late-afternoon game drives with a walk up Observation Hill and time at the swamps.
