Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi Tented Lodge is a small tented camp on the shore of Lake Ihema inside Akagera National Park. Nine separate tents are linked by raised walkways, each with an en-suite bathroom and a private patio.
It is a quiet, simple place, run on solar power, with no television or Wi-Fi. The days are about game drives, boat trips and birds, and the evenings are around the lakeside deck with its central fire.

Akagera offers a lot for a small camp, and the lake adds something different to a usual game-drive stay.
Game drives and night drives
Four-wheel-drive game drives explore the savannah and woodland of the park, and night drives are offered too.
Boat trips on the lake
Boat trips on Lake Ihema include a sunset outing, and are a good way to look for water birds such as the papyrus gonolek and the shoebill.
Walks and fishing
Guided walks are available, including a fence-line walk of around seven kilometres with a guide and an armed scout, and fishing is possible on the lake.

You can arrange community visits and a behind-the-scenes tour of the park headquarters.
Access & location
Ruzizi is on Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park, about two to three hours’ drive from Kigali, with the last stretch on gravel. We arrange your transfers and recommend at least two nights.

The main area has reception, a small bar, indoor dining and a large lakeside deck with a central fire, plus an outdoor pizza oven. Meals are on a full-board basis, with a set dinner in the evening. There is no Wi-Fi or television, and mobile signal is limited, with a phone at reception.

Each tent is a separate unit reached by raised walkways, with an en-suite bathroom with hot water, a dressing area and a private front patio looking towards the lake. A tree-top suite with a king bed and freestanding bath is also listed by some operators. Hippos are seen near the camp, and low wire fences keep them away from the tents. The walkways and balconies are not suited to small children, so it works best for older children and adults.
